The production quality is off the charts. However, this does not take away from my overall score which I shall highlight later.Īs expected of a Makoto Shinkai film, the artwork is beautiful. This lacking depth makes me constantly question the characters' actions throughout the film, and because I am constantly searching for a motivation for their actions besides purely as plot devices, I am effectively removed from the immersion. It warrants a 7 simply because I felt a lack of emotional depth from the characters. The story is fairly straightforward It's very easy to guess where the story will head, but that doesn't mean to His signature metaphorical use of trains, the idea of a hopeless and distant love, and beautiful scenery really dive you emotionally into the story, even for how generic and simple it may seem. The film holds true to all the expectations of a Makoto Shinkai production, from heartfelt smiles to crying the 5th time within the last 30 minutes. I'll try to keep my review as spoiler-less as possible. It's the same film to me, and I'd watch it however I can and in as many ways as I can.I watched this film at Anime Expo 2016 Los Angeles. I did think it was odd though.(technically, I like taki's tone better in the subbed version) I personally don't think the language changes the experience or effect of the film. At the time, I hadn't seen the subbed version yet, so I didn't ask for more details as to why the Japanese mother liked the English version more. Also the voices seemed to fit the faces better." However, her kids, who are only half Japanese and don't necessarily speak Japanese fluently thought the subbed version was far superior. She said, now these were her words so don't murder me, "it seemed like the story made more sense in the English version. Oddly enough, when asked, she said she liked the dubbed version better. They had already seen the Japanese dialogue version, and their mom is 100% Japanese. When I went to see it in theaters, I went to see the dub with a Japanese family. Though part of me likes the dubbed version a tiny bit more because I think the movie is too gorgeous to have to pay attention to subtitles. I personally like both versions pretty equally. I know this post is four days old, but I guess I want to share an unpopular opinion.
